United Backpackers

A new student hostel place in Melbourne, located opposite Flinders st station.

I was invited to attend their opening day.

Here the place is homely and there is a huge communal kitchen for all to store their stuff. Like the Couch the place has a family vibe to it where there is some sharing and friendships made.

It is about $32-$40 per night for a dormitory style room where you will share with others. It is about $50-$100 per night for a private room. The maximum time that anyone can stay is two weeks, but the time can be extended if need be.

The rooms are quite spacious, not as cramped as some other places are. Some of the private rooms have showers in there, but at other times you'll have to share the bathrooms with other residents. The private rooms all have a desk, a coming and going coat rack and a bin.

All the rooms have a reading light and heater.

There is free WI-FI for everyone.

The security is quite tight. There is a police station a few blocks away that is open 24 hours. Most of the building is via key card only (they will give this to you when you arrive). There is also a security guard there at night.

The staff there are quite friendly and enthusiastic about showing you some of the best things Melbourne has to offer.

There is still a lot of work that needs to be done. There is a graffiti wall to be done, but that will be done hopefully in time for Feburary.

For a cheap place to stay for the first few days in Melbourne, do visit this place. More information can be found at their site.
Students it is advisable to book early as the place fills up quite easily. Do come and check the place out. They are open for inspection anytime. You just need to book it here.
