Ayam Penyet RIA is a place in South Melbourne that is cheap and student friendly. They are "Cash only".
They have limited items on the menu and because they are such a humble place they don't have much seating and a bathroom. You have to go across the road for that. But the tram stops by.
The service there is friendly and fast.
It was here that I had fried chicken with rice and sambal and other things. Here it does not leave a hole in the wallet. All up it was $12.50 (including the sweet tea). The tea tasted a little bit weird but it was good. It was a good feed and I'm still full whilst writing this.
I have never really tried Indonesian food so this is a first. "gasp"
The fried chicken is the best ever. And their rice was just as good. The tofu was nice and so was their nutty thing. There wasn't achar as such rather its a vegetabley thing.
The tea was very sweet.
They don't do desserts but they do cendol.
Do come for the Indonesian experience. And do come when you don't have a lot of money to spare.
