AFIS Livelihood Workshop: Understanding Tax and Superannuation

RNIS went to the latest workshop by AFIS and got some useful information out of it.

Understanding Tax and Superannuation is important. In Australia students must have a tax file number when they are working as paying tax is a must. You must pay tax to the Government for things like public transport, hospitals, schools and roads.

Applying for the Tax File Number is easy as you go online to do this. You cannot use someone else's tax file number- it is illegal. If you do not give the bank your tax file number then they will tax you at the higher rate.

Every financial year you need to do a tax return. If you do not know how to do this then you can get it done by an accountant for $50-$100

Your employer also must pay 9% superannuation on top of your income. This is the money for when you retire and do not work anymore. It should not be touched. When you first get the job your employer will ask where you will want that superannuation to go to (which superfund). You can choose to use the Employers superfund or choose your own. If you choose your own you should choose the one that suits you best. Hostplus is a not for profit superfund which means the profit will go to you.

Cash in hand payments are illegal as there is no protections around it. There is no payslip and other written things and workers are vulnerable.
